ADHD, ancient practices and a quest to be…

Discovering solace in an unexpected symphony of ancient practices: yoga and acupuncture.

Living with ADHD can often feel like being the conductor of a chaotic orchestra, where each instrument insists on playing its own tune, disregarding harmony. For those who experience the whirlwind of symptoms that encompass attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, such as emotional dysregulation, persistent fidgeting, and impulsivity, finding serenity can seem elusive. However, my personal journey has led me to discover solace in an unexpected symphony of ancient practices: yoga and acupuncture.

The Yoga Connection

The practice of yoga, a discipline that dates back thousands of years, is like a dance of the body with the rhythm of the breath. It wasn't an immediate transformation, but rather a slow, mindful progression towards self-awareness and control. The postures (asanas), when synchronized with deep, purposeful breaths, gradually became a language through which I could communicate with my often restless body.

At first, the act of holding a pose demanded my complete focus, tethering my thoughts to the present moment. The mental chatter, a consistent companion of ADHD, began to quiet down. My concentration improved with each session as the very act of remaining still became a testament to patience and persistence. Through the tranquility of mindful breathing, the once jarring cacophony in my head gave way to a softer, gentler sound.

Acupuncture's Ancient Needles

On the other side of the spectrum, acupuncture, a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine, introduced a different kind of quiet. Initially met with skepticism — the idea of needles inducing calm seemed counterintuitive — I was soon proven wrong. Acupuncture encouraged my body's energy (or 'Qi') to flow smoothly, catalyzing a sense of balance and grounding that often eluded me.

The tiny needles, strategically placed at various points, often evoked a state of deep relaxation and a momentary pause in my internal buzz. Surprisingly, this practice not only steadied my fidgeting limbs but also soothed my emotional turbulence. By tapping into my body's natural ability to heal, acupuncture provided a respite from the relentless surge of emotions that ADHD often stirred within.

A Soaring Self-Esteem

Integrating yoga and acupuncture into my routine didn't offer a miracle cure, nor did it erase the symptoms of ADHD. However, they gifted me something just as valuable: coping mechanisms that enhanced my self-esteem and empowered me in my struggles.

Moving my body through yoga poses with intentional breathwork nourished my self-respect and helped dismantle the negative self-image that ADHD had constructed. Recognizing the progress I made each week, no matter how minor, reinforced a growing belief in my capabilities and potential.

Similarly, acupuncture sessions became milestones in personal growth. With each appointment, I sensed a boost in self-confidence, stemming from the understanding that I was taking proactive steps towards betterment. The tranquility found post-treatment was a testament to my ability to find peace amidst the chaos.

In Closing: A Symphony of Serenity

Neither yoga nor acupuncture are blanket solutions for ADHD; rather, they're instruments that, when played in harmony, can create a transformative melody. Through their combined powers, I’ve unfolded a map that guides me towards the eye of the storm — a place where silence reigns and stillness is sovereign. And it is here, in the heart of peaceful reprieve, that I've learned the art of just being.

I treat adults as well as children for ADHD. If you would like to know more get in touch or book a consultation.
